Just One on Friday Today

I don’t quite have time for my normal 5 on Friday post today, but I couldn’t resist popping in with a quick post.  We are getting ready to celebrate Casey’s graduation tonight and this weekend, and I can’t wait to see my in-laws later today.  Hooray for a short day in an already short week and a weekend full of celebration!

Christmas in Austin

Happy graduation day, Casey!  We are so excited to have you in Dallas next year for college!

See y’all Monday with a recap of the weekend!

My Summer Reading List

Growing up, I think I was one of the only children that actually looked forward to getting a summer reading list.  Now that I’m out of school and don’t have a teacher assigning me summer reading, I decided to assign myself some books to read this summer.  I keep a running list of books I want to read in a notebook, and I also have several screen shots on my phone of books to add to that list that I’ve come across on blogs or Instagram.  Oh and sometimes I run across books on Pinterest, so I keep a reference to some books on my “to read” list there.

Here are the ten books at the top of my list for summer 2014:

Books to Read

The Love Wars by L. Alison Heller/Absolute Power by David Baldacci/Defending Jacob by William Landay/The One & Only by Emily Giffin/Sycamore Row by John Grisham/The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt/Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple/Glitter and Glue by Kelly Corrigan/The Well’s End by Seth Fishman/Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain

Memorial Day Weekend 2014

Our weekend so far has been a perfect balance of relaxing at home and being out and about doing fun things with friends.  Love those weekends!  And I’m loving this extra day today to knock out some lingering items on my to-do list.

Friday night Austin refereed a scrimmage, and I had a very early night that consisted of me falling asleep on the couch at approximately 8pm.  It was pretty glorious.  Saturday morning we got some errands done, and then we got ready to go to a surprise 30th birthday party for our friend Oscar.  His wife Brooke planned for the first part of the party to be at a place where everyone played whirlyball for a couple of hours, and then after that we all went to Brooke & Oscar’s house for a cook out in their back yard.  Brooke had everything decorated so so so cute in their yard!  She is such a good hostess – and she’s also 7 months pregnant!

The guys particularly enjoyed whirlyball – it was pretty rough, and I was definitely a little sore on Sunday morning!  If you’re not familiar with this lovely game, it is basically lacrosse in bumper cars.  And the bumper cars have no brakes, so it is non-stop slamming into people.  Violent!

The backyard dinner was more my speed, and I was so impressed with all of Brooke’s cute details!  Austin was impressed with Oscar’s new fishing kayak (and also pretty jealous).

Happy 30th, Oscar and thanks for a wonderful party, Brooke!

On Sunday we got to squeeze in more friend time after church when we had lunch with a couple from our Sunday school class at one of my Dallas favorites, The Corner Market.  I tried their salad trio for the first time, and I think I found my new go-to for when I’m not in the mood for one of their delightful sandwiches.

Corner Market Lunch

We managed to sneak in a quick Sunday afternoon nap that was pretty wonderful, and then before we knew it, it was time to pick up Katey and Casey to head north to Mexican Sugar in Plano for a dinner date with some of my oldest and best friends.  We met our other friend Katie and her husband Jeremy at the restaurant, and we had such a good time catching up with them and visiting.  Katie and Jeremy are having a little girl in July!  We’re so excited for them!  I have known these two for a long long time, and I’m so glad that we all live so close to each other now after life has taken us all over the place the last ten or so years.

This morning we hit up the Katy Trial to try and run off some of that good food we’ve been eating.  There was an event going on called “Carry the Load,” and it appeared to be veterans walking in honor of their fallen friends and family.  The whole trail was lined with American flags, and it was a humbling way to start the morning on this Memorial Day.  I’m glad we got to observe that as we started our day.

We barely finished our run before the rain started, and unfortunately I think it is supposed to rain on and off all day today, so my plans for the pool are not looking to great.  Maybe the sun will come out soon!

5 on Friday – Vol. 35

Happy Friday to all of you and to the lovely hostesses of 5 on Friday - A.Liz Adventures, Carolina Charm, The Good Life, and Hello Happiness

ONE – We had a wonderful anniversary on Wednesday, and I was so surprised when Austin showed up at my work with a gorgeous flower arrangement that just so happened to include all of the flowers we had at our wedding.  So so sweet!  These have made my office smell absolutely heavenly, and I love looking at them all day while I’m working.

TWO – Ok who watches Revenge?  I just saw the season finale earlier this week, and I still can’t get over it.  Is David really alive?!  I’m so confused and I literally devoted a decent amount of my brain power today to this giant mystery.  Any ideas?  Any other Revenge fans?  Somehow I haven’t let myself get lost in the black hole of Google just yet on this.

THREE – We are trying a new restaurant with friends on Sunday night – I can’t wait to catch up with some of my favorites that I haven’t seen in far too long!

FOUR – Magazine week.  Does anyone else get every magazine they subscribe to within about three days of each other?  Seriously, I have an unread Real Simple, Southern Living, Garden & Gun, and D Magazine all waiting for me.  Thank goodness for a 3 day weekend!  I’m hoping to squeeze in one trip to the pool to get a little color and make a dent in this ever-growing pile of magazines.  I shouldn’t act like it is a chore – I love magazines, and I’m excited to have some down time this weekend to read them!

FIVE – Saw this on Pinterest and couldn’t resist the re-pin.  GWTW is my favorite movie in the world.  This reminded me that I haven’t watched in a while… probably need to remedy that soon and make Austin watch it with me.  {source}

Three Years

Celebrating three wonderful years of marriage today with my hilarious, encouraging, fun, supportive, and dedicated husband.  He is the most joyful person I know, and I’m so incredibly thankful for the joy he brings to my life each and every day!

Oh that was such a perfect day!  I could sit here and look at pictures for hours… actually I might have done that when getting this post ready.  Cheers to three wonderful years – I’m excited to see what year four brings!

Supper Club & The Byron

Ok, I must admit I’m kind of disappointed in myself for missing 5 on Friday last week.  That is usually my favorite post!  But, here we are at the beginning of a new week, and hopefully I can stay on track.  We had a fun weekend full of some of our favorite things, starting with a date night on Friday.  Austin surprised me and planned the whole thing as a celebration of my new job and our upcoming anniversary.  I am still full from all the delicious food we ate at Bob’s

On Saturday, Austin spent most of the day at the Byron Nelson golf tournament here in Dallas, and I got in a run with my friend Cam and took care of some other errands.  Saturday night we had supper club at Todd and Ali’s house and ate MORE wonderful food – Greek shrimp salad for an appetizer, pesto salmon and pasta for dinner, and one of the tastiest chocolate desserts I’ve ever had in my life.  I think I heard Ali call it “death by chocolate,” and that would most definitely be an appropriate name.  So amazing.

GS and DBC

Ali’s table looked so pretty and summery, plus y’all know I was loving her bird napkin rings!  I also loved those little glass bowls – you may not be able to tell, but they were footed.  So perfect for her salad appetizer and the dessert.

Ali's Table

We ended the night with a wild game of Taboo.  We usually play a game after dinner, and I think our true colors are starting to show because we seem to getting more and more competitive each month!

On Sunday after church, I joined Austin at the Byron Nelson for the afternoon, and we had a beautiful day to enjoy some golf.  Thankfully, we could pop in and out of Austin’s company’s skybox, because I sure could not have made it the four hours that we were there without that blessed air conditioning, snacks, and bottomless ice chest of water.

I’d say it was a successful weekend in big D with some of my favorite people and favorite foods.  Can’t wait to celebrate three years with my favorite husband in just a few days!

May Birchbox & May Cards

Now that it is the middle of May, I’m finally getting around to sharing my Birchbox for the month and of course Mom’s card of the month.

My last box in my birthday gift subscription came last week, and it was definitely a good one!  I think I got the May card a little earlier in the month, and I’ve been enjoying its cheerful flowers on my fridge.  Doesn’t it remind you a little bit of a Lilly pattern?  I love the pink and green! (Sorry for the wonky lighting in my kitchen.)

IMG_4020

And now for some of my favorite cards from Mays past – 2011 was the bride bird (Can you see the veil?!  I die!  And just so you know, blue and green were my wedding colors, and the bouquet on the card has a monogrammed ribbon just like my actual bouquet did!), 2012 was the hand-stitched monogram, and 2013 was the cute little bee and beehive.

And now for the Birchbox treats!  This was my view when I opened the box – I love how everything comes packaged so cute – even the inside of the box itself has a fun pattern.

And inside – three good sized Nexxus samples, some fun Pixi lip balm, a “power serum,” some sunscreen especially for the face, and the most intriguing item, two breath treatments.  I have never seen anything quite like the breath treatments – from reading the packages, they are crystals that you swish around in your mouth for 60 seconds and then swallow.  I’m totally putting one in my purse for today after lunch – hopefully it is not too weird!  The Pixi is also going in my purse – it is a good pink color, and I need to get in the habit of using lip balm more throughout the day so my lips don’t get too dry.

I have loved the fun boxes I’ve gotten each month, and I have quite the arsenal of products from each one that will probably last me quite a while.  A three month subscription is such a great gift idea!

Mother’s Day Weekend 2014

We had a fantastic weekend in Dallas that kicked off with a Rangers game on Friday night.  We watched the Rangers pull off an exciting win against the Boston Red Sox with some of our friends from church.  The game was almost a no-hitter!  I’m pretty sure Austin jinxed Yu Darvish for the second time this season when he started talking about the game being a no-hitter. I’ve quickly learned that that is not something one should ever speak of!  We love these friends, and I’m so glad we finally got a group picture with all four couples.  We have supper club this next weekend with these peeps, and I’m already looking forward to it.

Saturday was a super productive day at home for me.  Sometimes I just need a day with no plans other than housework to actually get some stuff done around here!  It doesn’t make for the best blogging material, but it makes for a short to-do list heading into the week, and I’m thankful that I had a day to do mundane things like cleaning and ironing and laundry.  I feel so much better going into the week with all of that behind me.

IMG_3991

On Sunday we were thrilled to have Austin’s parents and sister join us at church and for lunch and a visit!  It was such a treat to get to see them on Mother’s Day.  Austin helped me with a lot of the cooking prep on Saturday, and we had a great meal here after church.  I love any excuse to set the table, so bear with me through all the pictures!

Austin helped me decide on PW’s tortilla roll-up appetizers, and he was a big help in putting those together.  We also had sausage and grits quiche, glazed blueberry lemon scones, my favorite spinach salad, and strawberry mint lemonade.

We ended their quick visit with a stop at Austin’s sister’s soon-to-be new home when she moves to Dallas later this year for college.  We can’t wait to have her so close in just a few short months.

Hope your Mother’s Day weekend was wonderful, too!
